The Bull v/s Bear daily fight - Market Updates - New Feature

Indian Stock Markets are very volatile as one day there would be bulls around and the next day the bears would take over. The bulls of stock markets are basically the optimistic investor whereas the bear has pessimistic approach to investing.
So i was planning to add a new feature to my blog titled "The Bull v/s Bear Fight".

So here I go starting the fight:

: seems like you are almost dead, I am seeing that you are in dormant state from last 4-5 days and people who feed you are almost finished, God bless bulls of stock markets, BEARS ARE HERE....ha ha aha!

: ha ha ha! grrrrhh!! look i am back and that too with a bang, profit booking is taking a toll on you nad has made you weak and lame.(11/5)

Indian Markets : Oh this is just an instantanous dip and tomorrow would be my day again as fundamentals are with me...(11/5)

Indian Markets : Hey ya i am talking to you ...where are you hiding your dirty face..look my days are back! It was just the time taken by the food to reach me from Europe and look now i have plenty to eat and have already increased my weight by 3 percent WHAT SAY?

: sob sob!! how can this happen No way it's just a spike i'll return back soon and kill you , it's just like i am going in hibernation state will be back...and fight again

: You moron look there is no respite for you i have spread my peers all over the world and they will soon finish you up....hahahahaha!!!

: oh no way it's just like my peers have gone for vacations and once they come back you will repent on your words and at that time there would be no mercy for you ...

: ha ha ha! look i am all over the world markets poor guy your fodder source Greece is now unber me and soon you will die...count your days....(5/5/2010)

: You are mistaken my friend no power in this world can stop giving me food it's just matter of few days as the clouds over Greece's bailout clears I would get ample food and the you have to hide in your cave...just watch and dont be arrogant. my glorious days are coming soon again.(5/5/2010)

Out of the 2600-odd stocks listed on the BSE and NSE, 405 stocks have at least doubled their values from their 365-day lows touched in October last year. Simply put, one out every six stocks has gained over 100% from their one-year bottom.

When Sensex dipped to 7,697 on October 27 last year, many stocks such as Jindal Steel and Power crashed to their lows as investor sentiment went for a toss.

"With experts and governments hoping and implementing measures for a quicker recovery for the global economy, bulls have quickly turned the tables on bears and bought stocks across the board. This has led to an extreme appetite for stocks as many investors including foreign ones, even a few months ago were lying on the sidelines with their money," says the equity head of a foreign brokerage.

With sensex gaining momentum, the prices of many index constituents have gone up. From Rs 47 a share, the stock of Jaiprakash Associates now stands at Rs 138. Others like Sterlite have also gained — touching Rs 518 from 365-day low of Rs 164 (October 27). Tata Motors too has jumped from Rs 122 hit on November 20 2008, to Rs 272 at present.

With the stock markets losing steam and shape progressively from January 2009, many mid-caps and small-caps lost 50-60 % in less than two months.

SEBI tightens investment norms

(22/4/2009 - SEBI news ) - Market regulator SEBI imposed a ceiling of 30 per cent on resources a mutual fund can invest in the debt instruments of a single entity, a move that will help asset managers to diversify risks.

"The Board decided to amend the Seventh Schedule of SEBI (Mutual Fund) Regulations to provide that no mutual fund scheme shall invest more than 30 per cent of its net assets in money market instruments of an issuer," SEBI said in a statement after the Board meeting.

The schemes may, however, continue to invest up to 15 per cent or 20 per cent of its net assets, in other investment grade debt instruments of an issuer as already provided in the regulations, it added.

Welcoming the decision, AMFI Chairman A P Kurien said " the move was suggested by us as it will help in reducing risk by cutting down overexposure in a single entity."

Valueresearch CEO Dhirendra Kumar said it is a modest initiative by the regulator and will lead to reducing systemic risks. It will ensure safety of investors' money although it will be bit tough for fund houses to comply with.

Nifty updates April 2009 - Nifty premium widens

NSE stock Updates - Trade on Indian bourses was extremely choppy on Wednesday, with a steep fall initially on weak cues from global markets and a smart recovery later. The lower levels triggered heavy short covering as well as strong buying in frontline stocks, and even more aggressively in mid and small caps.

National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) 50-share Nifty ended 2.65 per cent higher at 3342.95 from Monday’s close. Intraday, the index touched a high of 3357.05 bouncing off a low of 3149.25. The top gainers were HCL Technologies (11.13%), Nalco (8.71%), GAIL (7.33%) and Unitech (7.07%).

In futures, Nifty April provisionally ended at a premium of 12 points, expanding from 5 points Monday. The contract price rose 2.89 per cent and open interest added enormous 60.79 lakh shares (provisional). The buy quantity was nearly twice that of sell, which indicates short covering and build up of long positions.

On the options front, unwinding of short positions was observed at Nifty strikes 3300 and 3200 while call buying was seen from 3400-3600 levels. On the other hand, put writing was witnessed at strikes 3300 and 3200. This hints at extended gains near term.

“The rally in late trade reminded me of Mark Mobius’ words that the Bull Run has already started. Now all eyes are on corporate earnings and the parliamentary elections. Any positive development on this front may lead Nifty to 3800 level and any unfavorable development may see some correction in the near term. However, at current levels I don’t expect any heavy correction,” said Kapil Mehta, analyst at Flexion Advisory.

Indian Stock Markets eroded nearly rs 20 trillion in fiscal year 2008-09

Investors witnessed an erosion of close to Rs 20 trillion from their wealth in the financial year 2008-09, with the Dalal Street crumbling
under the pressure of the global economic downturn, while Reliance Industries emerged as the biggest loser in the period.

The combined market valuation of all the listed companies in the country dropped to Rs 30,86,075 crore on the last day of this fiscal as against Rs 49,72,953.37 crore on March 31, 2008, leading to a loss of over Rs 18,86,000 crore during the period.

The country's most valued firm corporate behemoth ,Reliance Industries, saw an erosion of close to Rs 89,460 crore from its market valuation during the fiscal ended March 31, 2009.

Interestingly, the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark index Sensex, which accounts for around 48 per cent of the market capitalisation of all the listed companies, has suffered a loss of nearly Rs 10,00,000 crore for the fiscal ending March 31, 2009.

Besides, in dollar terms the total loss of market valuation comes out be significantly more as the Rupee has depreciated from Rs 40.02 per dollar on March 31, 2008 to about Rs 50.86 at present. The loss calculated in terms of the respective conversion rates at the two particular dates comes out to be as much as USD 636 billion.

Further, Foreign Institutional Investors have also played spoilsport for Indian equity markets as they have pulled out a whopping Rs 50,000 crore in FY' 2008-09 due to the liquidity crunch back home.

However, analysts predict elections are going to be the deciding factor for the way the domestic stock market would move forward in the next financial year as a stable government could prove positive for the Dalal Street.

SEBI to simplify share inheritance rules

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) will shortly modify some rules pertaining to inheritance of shares, based on the recommendations of the committee on ‘Transmission of Shares’, a person involved with the development told ET.

The move is likely to benefit the legal heirs awaiting inheritance of shares belonging to deceased relatives who neither made a will nor filed the mandatory nomination with depositories.

The new guidelines will pave the way for quick transmission of shares, especially physical shares. Brokers said investors residing away from urban centres have been facing maximum difficulties with respect to share inheritances.

Transmission means devolution of title to shares otherwise than by transfer, for example, devolution by death, succession, inheritance, bankruptcy, marriage, etc. Transmission is different from ‘transfer’; in transmission a person acquires an interest in the property by operation of law such as right of inheritance or succession, whereas transfer is effected by an act of the parties.

According to some people tracking the committee’s work, Sebi took about 16 months to move ahead on the report despite unanimity among committee members on addressing the difficulties in transmission of physical and dematerialised securities.

“In case of physical shares, companies would have to fix a threshold limit of 200 shares or Rs 1 lakh, whichever is higher, for transmission of shares after submitting the standardised documents,” said a person on the committee. “The limit will be the basic minimum limit to be adhered to by all listed companies.

Companies would require a deed of indemnity, an affidavit and a NoC in case there are other legal heirs. Those companies that have a higher threshold can continue with that,” he said. When the title to shares is passed by an operation of law, the beneficiary need not perform additional formalities.

Companies have different documentary compliances for the legal heirs of the deceased security holder. In many cases, this is tedious and discourages investors from following up on small amounts.

For instance, in case of a leading bank, a local manager submits a verification report on whether the legal heir possesses a succession certificate or the probated will. Market participants familiar with the development point to the need for updating the nomination of lakhs of investors.

FII to remain positive in 2009

India Infoline expects domestic equities market to generate a return of over 30% in 2009. The prediction stems from three broad views - India is relatively better positioned for stronger and faster economic growth than rest of the world, a reversal of downward pressure on the rupee due to the turnaround in current account and sharp decline in cost of capital.

According to India Infoline analysts, while corporate capex will likely take a long time to recover, public spending and infrastructure spending will hold up well. Even as cost of capital is rapidly coming off, domestic liquidity conditions have improved and thus credit availability should improve. The sharp declines in commodity prices have reduced the cost of building infrastructure by 15-25% across the board.

"Notwithstanding large declines expected in external trade, a deceleration in industrial and services sectors and the investment cycle, we believe India is well positioned to grow its GDP by at least 5-6% in 2009. Industrial growth too will likely revive more quickly, owing to large capacity additions in core sectors, especially those where growth is constrained by supply," the Infoline report said.

Although India is still trading at a 20% premium to the MSCI EM index, this premium is lower than the average of 40% that it enjoyed over the past five and half years. Thus in a relative sense, Indian equities have been de-rated vis-a-vis emerging markets.

"The brokerage believes, FII flows will be positive in 2009, led mainly by increased weights in emerging markets and global funds. Earnings growth momentum and macro data will be bad for the next few quarters, but markets will look for growth cues beyond the next 2-3 quarters," the India Infoline report said.

The report states that earnings growth, except in commodities and select domestic cyclicals, will either be resilient or in most cases will likely be better than what markets are pricing in, especially from the third quarter of next fiscal. The brokerage has picked Tata Steel, Suzlon Energy, Bajaj Auto, ICICI Bank and DLF Ltd as the 'dark horses' for 2009. India Infoline is overweight on financials and consumer staples sectors and underweight on IT and energy sectors.
