BSE | Nifty growth looks deceptive wrto FII's made

The Indian stock market has risen sharply on the back of renewed foreign inflows in recent weeks. The Sensex is up 45% compared to its level in both January and April. FII inflows, which were negative in 2008-09, have turned positive. In April and May, we had $5 billion of net FII inflows into the Indian stock market.

First, it would be unwise to make any linear extrapolation from the FII inflows seen so far. In 2008-09, foreign investors fled the Indian market just as they did other emerging markets. FII inflows in 2008-09 were minus $11 billion. This was a panic reaction to troubled conditions in the US and Europe. In such conditions, there is a ‘flight to safety’- investors tend to pull their money out of risky assets and park it in US treasuries.

Since 1991, only once before have we seen negative FII flows and that was in 1998-99 when FII flows were minus $390 million. At that time, the crisis was centred in East Asia. Now, it’s centred in the US, which is by far the biggest source of portfolio flows. That is why FII outflows in 2008-09 have been far larger than in the East-Asian crisis.

Investors see the global situation as stabilising although recovery will be a long drawn-out affair. They also think that some emerging markets, such as India and China, will do better than thought a few months ago. The withdrawal of FII funds from India last year caused valuations to drop to a level where entry became attractive. So, FII flows have returned with a bang.

But this does not mean that FII inflows will continue at anywhere near the same pace as in April-May. FII flows attained their peak of $20 billion in 2007-08 at the height of the global boom. The next highest level was $11 billion in 2003-04. It is unlikely that FII flows in the current year can match the 2007-08 level.

A total of about 1.2 lakh new stock market investors opened their demat accounts, which is necessary to trade in equities, during the month of May, according to data available with the two depositories, National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL).

This has increased the total number of demat accounts in the country to over 1.5 crore.

Indian Economy News & Updates

The market experts believe that the inflow of a large number of new investors into the market could be attributed the sharp surge in the recent months as well as expectations for revival of the IPO market with some fundamentally-sound public issues by the government-run companies.

BSE closing - remains flat as midcaps gain

Oil shares reacted to reports that the new UPA government planned to cap profits of crude producers such as ONGC, Oil India, Reliance Industries and Cairn India as part of a transparent and sustainable subsidy-sharing system for the sector.

The proposal to levy a special oil tax was part of the recommendations of the BK Chaturvedi Committee, appointed to look into oil pricing as a replacement for the current subsidy-sharing plan that has been criticised for its lack of transparency.

Sensex will cross 15,000 level tomorrow

BSE's SENSEX is likely to cross the 15,000 level tomorrow and may hit the first upper circuit of 10 per cent as the upbeat market sentiment may attract retail investors to cash in on the bullish phase, analysts said.

Major market players were of the opinion that today's rally of nearly 20 per cent suggests the market might gather momentum in coming sessions amid picking up of capital inflows by foreign funds, and any support from retail investors would place the key-index beyond 15,000 points levels soon.

"Market may see small movement of 500-700 points. It may witness 15,000 mark in intraday trade at which point it may see sell-off," Keynote Research Senior Vice President Nitin A Khandkar said.

After a sea-change in the market scenario, speculators would also run to cover up their pending short positions on fears of further upsurge in the share prices.

"Investors who could not take part in the rally today may try to reap gains tomorrow," a NSE broker Rajeev Mallik said adding there were chances of the market hitting a 10 per cent upper circuit in early trade tomorrow. And if this happens, the barometer would be at around 15,500 points without taking much time, he said.

Many of the analysts feel the 30-share benchmark may touch the 15,000 level if the rally continues tomorrow, with some of them not ruling out that an upper circuit breaker might be hit again.

Stocks funds miss once-in-a-decade opportunity

Nearly nine of every ten Indian diversified equity funds lagged the benchmark index's best monthly gains in 10 years as double digit cash levels diluted returns in April, data from global fund tracker Lipper show.

These funds, making the largest stock funds category in terms of numbers and asset under management, posted a 13.7 percent jump in their net values in April, the best since December 2003.

However, nearly 90 percent of the 285 funds tracked by Lipper failed to beat the 17.45 percent surge in the 30-share BSE index, which showed the best monthly performance in 10 years, as a wave of improved investor confidence swept across the world. "We think these funds lagged the broader indices, primarily due to their allocations to cash and non benchmark holdings," Chintamani Dagade, a senior research analyst with Morningstar India, said.

"Having said that, these funds reduced their cash allocations significantly in April to benefit from a surprise rally in March," he added.

Indian funds had everything going well in April, their large sectoral bets such as financials, capital goods and energy rallied on growing optimism that the global economy was on the mend, driving billions of dollars back into emerging markets.

BSE | NIFTY looks @ Lok Sabha elections hoping of turnaround

The stock market is riding a global rally and is hoping a major party wins a strong hand at coming elections, but could be beaten back if a One out of six stocks beat Sensex fractious group of parties including Communists gains influence at the polls.

Investors are pricing victory for a coalition led by either the ruling Congress or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when the world's largest democracy goes to polls between April 16 and May 13 against a backdrop of slowing growth.

But cracks in the two main national coalitions have raised fears that a "Third Front" could tip the balance of power, which market watchers believe could pull down stocks by between 15 to 30 per cent from current levels.

"Developments in politics seem to be increasing the probability of very fragmented parliament, which could spoil chances for a post-election recovery in markets as well," Morgan Stanley analyst Ridham Desai said in a recent note.

The benchmark 30-share BSE index fell more than 52 per cent in 2008, a record fall, and lost ground at the start of 2009. The index looks to have found a footing since early March, rising 9 per cent in the month on hopes the worst may have passed for the world economy.

That was enough to see the market finish the March quarter up 0.6 per cent, its first quarterly rise since the end of 2007. It rose another 2 per cent on Wednesday to close at 9,901.99
